Horological Science #136

NAWCC Palomar Chapter #136

National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors

Vista, California

November 27th, 2004 Meeting

PROGRAM: THE ATKINS COLLECTION

This is a brand new National program recorded at the 2004 National Convention and it consists of a walking tour of the collection of clocks made by Irenus Atkins. This is a comprehensive tour of Atkins clocks covering virtually every case style and movement design that were made by Atkins's companies and partnerships. If you do not have an Atkins here is a chance to see what you are missing.

ELECTIONS ARE YOU STILL WITH US!!

As announced at the October there will be an election this month for the officers for 2005. As noted in the report of the October meeting below we will be voting on the offices of President Vice President Secretary and Treasurer as well as one or two directors.

OCTOBER MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

John Okonski, substituting for President Rod Groenewold, opened our October 23rd meeting at 6:50 p. m. with a total of 24 members and guests present. John also served as Program Chairman and hosted the refreshments for the evening plus providing door prizes. What a multitalented member we have! Thanks! Rod's duties at the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum prevented him from attending.

John introduced and welcomed Bill Crevola, a friend and neighbor of Joe Kunkler.

Members were advised that effective October 1st, 2004, the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, Inc. (NAWCC), a non-profit New York corporation and the National Association of Watch Clock Collectors Museum, Inc. (Museum), a non-profit Pennsylvania corporation, announced the formal completion of a merger . The new entity will be a non-profit 501(c)(3) Pennsylvania corporation headquartered in Columbia, Pennsylvania, named the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, Inc.

Upcoming events announced were the Southwest California Regional hosted by Chapter 59 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds beginning Thursday evening, November 18th through 3 p.m., Saturday, November 20th. Chapter 4 will hold their Merrimart on Sunday, November 21st at the Bellflower Masonic Lodge. The Greater Los Angeles Regional is scheduled for February 4th and 5th, 2005 at the Pasadena Center.

Brad Johnson, Treasurer, informed members that the chapter netted $315.04 from our Picnic Mart held on September 11th. Our monthly expenses for rent, postage and refreshments regularly exceed the income received at the door.

As it is now time to solicit officers for the coming year, John advised that Rod Groenwold agreed for a second term as President; he will continue as Vice President, Brad Johnson as Treasurer and the position of Secretary will be shared by Jim and Mildred Espy. Chuck Cambis will serve another term as Director-at-Large so our slate is nearing completion.

In considering programs for the coming year, Bernie agreed to present a program in January, Verlyn Kuhlmann in February, Seymour Glick in March, hopefully a visit to the Music Box Museum in April, Brad Johnson in May, and Rod will be asked to present a program on using E-Bay in June. Chapter 136 has some very interesting meetings to look forward to in 2005!

A DVD program, "Electric and Self-Winding Clocks and Exhibit", shown at the 2004 National Convention was summarized for us by John Okonski due to its length; however, we were able to view a very interesting presentation by Rodney King of the clocks displayed in the Exhibit. Bernie said that all of the clocks shown actually belonged in Mr. King's collection.

There was no "Show-n-Tell"; however, Seymour Glick shared an unusual experience he had with a self-winding clock he purchased in Pennsylvania. Since it was decided at our August meeting to discontinue giving cash as a door prize and being to offer a choice of some appropriate item, this evening's selections were electric clocks. Two names were drawn -- Wayne Preston and Yvonne Preston -- so they went home with two more clocks! (Not that they needed any more according to Yvonne!)

As there was no further business, our meeting was adjourned. Our next meeting will be the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 27th, at 6:00 p.m. Jim and Millie Espy.

SHOW AND TELL

There are very few Atkins clocks around but if you have one we would really like you to bring it so we can see on live and up close. If you do not have an Atkins clock then you may bring any clock or watch you feel may be of interest.

BREAKFAST MEETING
