February 1998

Abstract

Volume 140 no.2

The cover feature of the February issue is a report on the 9th Dingwall-Beloe Lecture at the British Museum. Delivered by Dr Peter Friess, Director of the Deutches Museum Bonn, the lecture dealt with the watches and clocks of Joseph Weidenheimer and the organisation of Craft Guilds in 18th Century Germany.

There is the first instalment of an article by Dennis Harris on the development of luminous dials, a colour feature by Brian Loomes on transfer printed dials, Archie Perkins continues his series on jewelling and John Munro describes a unusual carriage clock he made some years ago.

Philip Woodward reviews a new edition of' Greenwich Time and the Longitude by Derek Howse and in a 'Viewpoint' piece Chris McKay urges the BHI to consider its future role. Arthur Ord-Hulme reponds to the critical review of his book on the restoration of musical boxes published in December. The 'article of the month' deals with the retirement of Eliot Isaacs.
