Abstract
Volume 139 no.7
This month is the Bicentenary of the infamous 'Act of Parliament' when the British Government, short of
money for fighting the French (and having had problems taxing the American Colonists), decided to tax
clocks and watches. Articles by Ivan Slee and Brian Loomes discuss the Act and the (wrongly) associated
clocks. Three splendid examples appear on the covers. Jim Nicholson writes about screw threads. James
Mowat deals with the pleasures of clockmaking. Richard Good describes the Auburndale Rotary Watch of 1878
(article of the month). Tim Voore has yet more to say about the Shortt Clock (by the way Upton Hall now
has 3! surely a record). A D Stewart deals with the Morrison Regulator at the National Physical Laboratory.
Tony Gray reviews a magnificent new book on French clocks. There is an account of Annual General Meetings
of the BHI the AHS and the British Sundial Society.
