Chapter 6.0

6.0 "Duds"

Note: I am listing books that one or more contributers feel are "losers". Caveat emptor. Then again, one person's lemon is another's lemonade. -Ron

  • Britten, F. W.: "Horological Hints and Helps". 4th revised. 1988 Antique Collectors' Club, Suffolk. [Watches & Clocks (repair, tools): Poor; do not confuse with F.J. Britten! Very badly written and edited. Some useful information, perhaps. Richard Watkins (richard@calvados.apana.org.au)]
  • Britten, F W: "The Watch Repairers' Instructor". 1946. The Technical Press, London. [Watches (repair, tools): Mediocre. Introductory but a source of useful information. So badly written and edited it is enjoyable! Title page states "Author of Old Clocks and Watches", etc." which, if referring to FJ Britten's work is a lie. Richard Watkins (richard@calvados.apana.org.au)]
  • Bruton, Eric: "Dictionary Of Clocks And Watches". 1962. Arco Publications, London, [Watches & Clocks (history, movement types): Mediocre. Superficial. Richard Watkins (richard@calvados.apana.org.au)] [With so many good "dictionaries" available it is a wonder why a person of BrutonAEs capabilities even bothered with this. -Ron]
  • Harris, Burford P. "Modern Watch and Clock Repairing". 1972. Nelson Hall, Chicago, [Watches & Clocks (repair, tools):Poor; a self-education course with very little to recommend it. Richard Watkins (richard@calvados.apana.org.au)]
  • Selby, Isabella de Lisle: "Wrist-Watches: The Collectors Guide to identifying, Buying and Enjoying New and Vintage Wristwatches". 1994. New Burlington Books, London. [Watches (description, history): Superficial, probably inaccurate and amost totally devoid of useful information. Richard Watkins (richard@calvados.apana.org.au)]
  • Shaffer, Douglas H. "Clocks". 1980. Cooper-Hewitt Museum of the Smithsonian Institution, USA,. [Watches & Clocks (description, history): Mediocre. Coffee-table style but with some useful historical information. Richard Watkins (richard@calvados.apana.org.au)]
  • Uresovss, Libuse. "European Clocks: An Illustrated History of Clocks and Watches". 1986. Peerage Books. [Watches & Clocks (description, history): Mediocre. Richard Watkins (richard@calvados.apana.org.au)]
  • Wenham, Edward. "Old Clocks". 1964. Spring Books, London. [Clocks (description, history): Mediocre. Richard Watkins (richard@calvados.apana.org.au)]
  • Wood, E. J. "Curiosities of Clocks and Watches". 1866. Richard Bentley, London. [Watches & Clocks (history): Very interesting in patches in between long boring lists of what different people owned. Richard Watkins (richard@calvados.apana.org.au)]
