  • Daniels, George. "Watchmaking". 1981. Sotheby Publications. [Covers all aspects of making watches by hand, rather than just their repair. Most watch books tell you how to install friction-fit jewels or "rub in" jewels--this one tells you how to pierce and polish jewels and form their oil-sinks. Includes sections on casemaking, making engine-turned dials, etc. Lots of line drawings and 8 beautiful plates in the front--close-up shots of handmade watches and their parts and three views of Mr. Daniels' workshop which to me are almost as appealing as the watches themselves. Don Holly <HOLLY@psl.wisc.edu>] [Fantasic craftsmanship, explained and beautifully illustrated, although I have read it and still can't make watches like Daniels! Ian White <white@STC.NATO.INT>]

  • Fried, Henry B. "Repairing Quartz Watches" 1988. AWI Press. Much of the book is spent explaining the basics of electricity and electronics as applied to watches. There is some more specific, useful information about quartz watch repair in the remaining part of the book, but I would say the best audience for the book would be watchmakers without much electrical/electronics background. Don Holly <HOLLY@psl.wisc.edu>]
  • Garrard, F.J.: "Watch Repairing, Cleaning and Adjusting" (1st edition). 1903. Crosby Lockwood and Son, London. [Watches (repair, tools): Excellent. Very clear and well written. Includes a chapter on verge conversions. Richard Watkins (richard@calvados.apana.org.au]

Drawings and photos of automatic watch machinery, stamping machines, etc., and descriptions of their setup, tolerances, etc. A friend bought this for me as a gag; while it's of little use to the watch repairman, I found it to be quite interesting, since it gives a perspective on watchmaking that I haven't seen elsewhere.
