Chapter 2.4

2.4 Collector's Guides

2.4.1 General

  • Shenton, Alan and Rita. 1985. "The Price Guide to Collectible Clocks, 1840-1940". 2nd ed. Antique Collectors' Club, Woodbridge, Suffolk, England. 479 pp. [Top ten. One of the first general books I check for modern clocks. Many fine photos. Covers most types you would find in a good antique shop. 50+ pages on electrics. Interesting text. Prices in pounds. Mentions annual price revision list but I don't know if these are available. -Ron ]

2.4.2 Geographic

Also Collectors' Club, Suffolk, 1991 This covers English Long Case, Lantern, and Bracket Clocks from 1600 to 1820. [DaveLasker@aol.com]. [Fine illustrations with commentary but not enough inside cases; chapters by type; list much to brief, e.g. Seth Thomas (include the company) has two dates- "c. 1805" and "Plymouth Hollow renamed...1866" (actually it was 1865). Worth having. Ron]
  • Eckherdt, George H. "Pennsylvania Clocks and Clock Makers". Bonanza Books a division of Crown Publishers [John Weight (JWeight@CASMAIL.CALACADEMY.ORG)]

  • Parmer, Brooks. "The Book of American Clocks". 1950. The Macmillan Co., New York. 318pp. [Parmer hadn't quite figured out what he wanted to do in this important early book on American clocks. About half of the book is devoted to pictures that appear better in newer books. The second half is a fine list of makers that forms the basis for every later list. Should be used with Parmer's "Treasury of American Clocks. -Ron]
  • Parmer, Brooks. "A Treasury of American Clocks". 1967. The Macmillan Co., New York. 371pp + xi. [This book sets the standard for American clock guides. Parmer divides the clock types into chapters and with the case, often shows movements and clock papers. List of makers supplements list in "The Book of American Clocks. -Ron]
