Chapter 1.4

1.4 Collector's Guides

1.4.1 General

  • Jagger, Cedric: "Royal Clocks". 1983. Robert Hale, London, [Watches & Clocks (description, history): Excellent. Richard Watkins (richard@calvados.apana.org.au)]

1.4.2 Geographic

  • Bailey, Chris. "Two Hundred Years of American Clocks and Watches". 1975. Rutledge Books (Prentice Hall), New Jersey. 255pp, 285 ill. [A favorite. See under 1.2, History. -Ron]
  • Britten, F. J. "Brittens Old Clocks and Watches and their Makers". 9th ed. 1982. Methuen, London. 700 pp. [English, older clocks and watches. Best part is the 350+ pages listing international makers active 1875 and earlier. Should be available for less than $50-- I got mine for 18 pounds. -Ron] [Watches & Clocks (dating, description, history, identification, makers, movement types): Excellent. Probably the most useful text for history and makers of English clocks and watches. The revised 3rd edition by the Antique Collector's Club has a different text and may be better. Richard Watkins (richard@calvados.apana.org.au)]

1.4.3 Styles

Electrical

  • Crum, Elmer and Keller, William, eds. "150 years of Electrical Horology". 1992. Midwest Electrical Horology Group. Chicago. 101 pp. [There's nothing like it for people interested in electrical and battery clocks (some watches). Listed by electrical and battery clocks (some watches). Listed by company-- history, pictures, references. Published by NAWCC Midwest Horological Group for the 1992 National Convention Available from NAWCC and other sellers. -Ron]

1.4.4 Makers

  • -----. "The Art of Breguet ". Auction catalogue, Hapsburg 1991. [this is a lavishly produced book illustrating about $12 million dollars of Breguet watches, which were sold at Hapsburg's sale in Geneva. This firm regularly auction specialist items and produce wonderful 'catalogues'. The book by Daniels of the same title is also superb. Ian White <white@STC.NATO.INT>] [Ian has placed this book under a new category--"DROOLING" -Ron]
  • Baillie, G H: "Watchmakers and Clockmakers Of The World Volume 1". 1988. N.A.G. Press, Essex. [Watches & Clocks (dating, makers): Necessary. Basic reference for pre 1825 makers. Richard Watkins (richard@calvados.apana.org.au)]
  • Kochmann, Karl: "Clock and Watch Trademark Index - European Origin". 1992. Antique Clocks Publishing, California. [Watches & Clocks (dating, identification): Useful list of trademarks. Richard Watkins (richard@calvados.apana.org.au)]
  • Loomes, Brian: "Watchmakers And Clockmakers Of The World Volume 2". 2nd ed. 1989. N.A.G. Press, Essex. [Watches & Clocks (dating, makers): Excellent. Basic reference for post 1825 makers. Richard Watkins (richard@calvados.apana.org.au)]
  • Sposato, Kenneth A. "The Dictionary of American Clock & Watch Makers". 1983. Kenneth A. Sposato, 46 Gedney Park Drive, White Plains, NY 10605. 192pp. [This is probably the most complete listing available and one that I regularly refer to. I wish I could say more good things about it because the author obviously put much effort into it. Much of his data comes from Brooks Parmer's books but he gives no citations. Parmer's lists cite sources, e.g., city directories, and gives more history; Sposato's doesn't so much information must be taken at face value. Book is also available from NAWCC in Mart. -Ron]
