Chapter 1.2

1.2 History

  • Bailey, Chris. "Two Hundred Years of American Clocks and Watches". 1975. Rutledge Books (Prentice Hall), New Jersey. 255pp, 285 ill. [One of my favorites. Arranged chronographically, with good histories of makers in perspective with their periods. Excellent index locates makers better than lists. Good illustrations complement text. Only 31 pp on watches. -Ron]
  • Benson, James W. "Time and Time-Tellers". 1875. Robert Hardwicke, London. [Watches & Clocks (history): Very good. Benson was a clock maker and held a royal appointment. Richard Watkins (richard@calvados.apana.org.au)]
  • Brearley, Harry C. "Time Telling Through the Ages", 1919. [Watches & Clocks (history, makers): Published to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Ingersoll Watch Co. Well written and interesting account. Richard Watkins (richard@calvados.apana.org.au)]
  • Bruton, Eric. "The History of Clocks and Watches". 1979. Orbis Publishing. [A coffee-table book with many beautiful color photographs. Don Holly <HOLLY@psl.wisc.edu>]
  • Jendritsky, R. "Horologie Moderne et Son Tour". 1959. Scriptar, Lausanne.
  • Kendal, James. "A History of Watches and other Timekeepers". 1892. Crosby Lockwood and Son, London. [Watches & Clocks (description, history). OK. Interesting. Richard Watkins (richard@calvados.apana.org.au)]
  • Landes, Davis. "Revolution in Time". 1983. Belknap Press, Harvard UP, Cambridge, Mass. 482+ pp. [Brilliant panoramic review of the history of timekeeping from a social perspective. [Ian White <white@STC.NATO.INT>]
  • Thomson, Richard. "Antique American Clocks and Watches". 1968. Litton Educational Pub. Inc., Galahad Books, New York. 192pp. [John Weight (JWeight@CASMAIL.CALACADEMY.ORG)] [A nice brief book,. more a series of essays on subjects of interest to the author than an overview. For instance, 5 pages on Waltham and 8 on the rest of the watch factories; 14 pp on Eli Terry and only occasional references to Seth Thomas and nothing on Brown, Manross or Welch. It's in reprint but I wouldn't spend much on it. -Ron]
